Girl in the Curl Surf Shop Dana Point Art

How else would messages of promise exist scattered around beach towns in sunny Southern California, known for its epic waves and laid-back littoral culture?

On surfboards, of course.

Mystery messages inscribed on surfboards have been popping up effectually Dana Point and Laguna Beach, making people wonder who is behind the inspiring words.

Mary Hartmann arrived earlier this week at her surf shop, Girl in the Roll, bummed out about having to shut her doors along with other businesses during the coronavirus crunch.

"I was feeling low," she said. "Something prompted me to go to the shop."

She idea her brother, surf instructor Todd Leetch, had accidentally left a board outside, merely realized the pink surfboard was painted with the words: "Spread hope, not fear."

"Information technology was this beautiful bulletin, I just started sobbing," Hartmann said. "It was simply what I needed to see. I'm in tears thinking about information technology. It was the encouragement I needed."

After she posted photos online, she learned in that location were more boards scattered around boondocks. A turquoise board fixed to railings in the Dana Point Harbor reads "Exist Well/Dana Point Strong," and another was posted up exterior of Dana Signal High School.

A cherry-and-white surfboard was placed at Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach with a bulletin for employees: "Cheers Health Workers!"

"Information technology's just a beautiful thing," Hartmann said. "Nobody knows who is doing information technology. It's evidently surfers, they are using surfboards."

Hartmann pestered friends in the surf community to discover out who was behind the act of kindness, learning from one tight-lipped, simply plainly in-the-know friend that there are 3 more, for a total of seven, scattered around South County.

"Information technology's all about the discovery," Hartmann said of the endeavor to not reveal all the locations. "It has just created this mystery."

The surfboards veiled in secrecy are causing a fizz around town and helping others who might need a elevator, she said.

"Information technology started this movement, it'south just stoking people out and spreading the feeling of dearest and unity in their customs. It'southward spreading like wildfire," she said, noting a friend in Hawaii said they were going to start this on the islands.

Leetch said he hasn't been able to give surf lessons at Doheny State Beach as he commonly does during bound pause, and not beingness in the h2o has been a bummer.

"Information technology's just filling the community with joy," he said. "It'south a dark, depressing fourth dimension for those of usa who tin't piece of work. It just made us feel like we're all in it together. We just accept to stick together and stay strong."

David Olive, a local surfer who works security in the Dana Point Harbor, said he saw the surfboard posted outside of Coffee Importers.  He reported it to the management company, simply so far, they've left it alone.

People have been stopping to snap selfies with the surfboard.

"I think people around the earth accept their special ways of forming their solidarity," Olive said.  "This is how we do it here. Information technology's kind of fun and kind of cool."
